Blackberry white chocolate pecan pancakes. These tart wonders are a new favorite. We'll hopefully get some in the ground next season, late winterish? Not sure when you plant these. Some mulberry trees as well. We'll just have to keep our cars at a safe distance from the birds that eat the mulberries or it'll be purple and pink splattered rides.

Heat hot caliente fried baked sizzled blistered
Forecast. 95 96 97 96 93 93 95. Pity us the farmers and any remaining early summer crops.
Clover's been trying to cop my style lately and I'm not sure how I feel about it. She looks a little more hispanic than I do with the hat and all, so I guess it doesn't bother me too much. Probably just a phase. If only I could look that innocent though. Poor thing is on an antibiotic from a tick bite. The vet thought she had Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Hopefully she'll be back to normal soon.
Our floors are almost done. Just half of the big room to go. We can now count the weeks til we move on our ten digits.
Almost as exciting---the deep purple gladiolas we have blooming. Take another little piece of my heart why don't ya.

Filler
Scabiosa, Monarda (lemon mint), Ammi. June is the month of the mixed bouquet. Too many flowers that wouldn't sell as a straight bunch. I love scabiosa. Horrible name, sounds like a witch's disease. I grew it great my first season and haven't been able to grow it well since. I can't resist trying though.
Don't mistake the wild poison hemlock with Queen Anne's Lace. We had a furious customer storm up one day and ask us if we grow Queen Anne's Lace. 'Yes we do'.
'Well you shouldn't! I was driving along and saw some on the side of the road so I stopped and cut some and got this horrible itchy rash that has been bothering me all week.'
At the time I didn't know about poison hemlock, so I was taken aback and made to feel like I was doing something very wrong. I told her I've never reacted that way to it. She said I shouldn't grow it for liability reasons. I said I would think about it. So mind your poisonous plants everyone and we'll mind the furious customers.
I have heard asclepias plants and 'snow on the mountain' will produce a sap that can cause some serious skin irritations so we don't grow those even though I think they're lovely. Those green hairy balls? C'mon, what fun. And snow on the mountain, with some nice reds? Gorgeous.Sunday, June 13, 2010
June 12th Market
Yellow is the new black at Bluebird Meadows. Great market for June when we tend to have a major dip in sales. Last year there were two markets in June where we only needed one person to be at market. What we need to add to the lineup---blackberries (so we don't have to chase them down at market) early blueberries, shittake mushrooms, beets, and early potatoes. Maybe more green beans, but who wants to harvest more green beans???

One potato two potato.....
On the way to the farm with my brother's dog Jazz. We also call her bighead and big booty Jazz. She weighs around 130. It took me about a year to not be scared of her. Now I think she is a big baby. I wish everyone could see Clover's face when Jazz jumps in the truck behind her. She whispers under her breath, 'seriously?', waits til' she makes eye contact with me, then makes an audible moan for all to hear.

Home Improvements
Our little farmhouse is coming together. The flooring is at the warehouse and will hopefully go down in the next couple weeks. The porch ceiling is done....we just need to finish the columns and the stairs. The back porch is being built with plans (drumroll please) for an outdoor shower! Most of the tile is done except for our bathroom. Soon, so soon. I wonder if we'll be more productive on the farm once we live here or if the proximity of a nice resting place will draw us away from the garden like a siren's song. We shall see.
June 5th Market
Slower than usual. We had big huge 'stop the press' plans to pickle a ton of leftover cucumbers and possibly some squash....gathered all the goods for said endeavor.....and then took a nap instead on Sunday. soooooo, we're betting on more leftover cukes next week to actually complete these ambitious plans. Customers LOVE safflower. I think I will plant more next year. skip the lilies, more safflower. done.
