On the flip side

We got to celebrate Mother's Day with a trip to Duke Gardens, one of my favorite places where I have logged many contemplative and restful hours meandering through this manicured slice of heaven.  Stuart suggested it last weekend so it helped me get through this wild and crazy week knowing I had a big treat coming.  We had our third best market this past Saturday, which means we had a hell of a lot to get ready and harvest.  The week started out with Ruth having a 103 degree temperature to top it off.  Her second fever in four weeks.  Luckily neither fevers were UTIs but taxing on the parents nevertheless.  No sleep for the weary.  We're thinking at this point she just burns hot.  But we got through the week (a desperate phone call or two to elicit some farm help from a couple brothers came in handy! and Brittany you rocked it out too!) in fine form and the flowers sold like there was no tomorrow, which always makes me a happy lady.    Stuart got me an awesome pendant in the shape of NC that is hand sawed out of recycled tin from a lady out of Pittsboro.  LOVE IT!  Even after our state voted for that ridiculous amendment banning gay marriage and the recognition of civil unions I still love NC.  My home state where my roots run deep, where every day they get a little stronger with the challenges and stresses and I become more aware of how interconnected they are with everything surrounding them.  Feeder roots that must be nourished in turn by my environment, my friends, my family.  I know, I should be banned from making such metaphors on this blog.  How trite.  Kind of like how Stuart banned me from giving Ruth a flower name.  But comparisons must be drawn!  I am a tree in my own right!!!   Probably not as beautiful a tree as the Himalayan Yew that has gotten so big, or the majestic Southern Red Oak, or the ancient Gingko and Dawn Redwood at the gardens, or the new purple tinged Redbud that blooms with the shame of Judas.  But an Alice tree, with all my ancestry and love for life coursing through me.  Happy Mother's Day everyone.

Every time I look at your blog I wait to see if the tag line has been changed to Farm-Human-Dog-Baby relations.........
I miss y'all--let's hang out when we can find the time. I haven't seen Baby Ruth in months (you see who I really want to hang out with)
Also--if you can think of an approximate (or actual time) that you might want to go down to Bald Head Island I'll talk to my Uncle and we'll cruise the beach in the golf cart. It's paradise there....
